Home Is Where the Heart Is: A Cliché That Works for the Contented Homemaker

Sunshine in the Living Room. The Artist’s Wife and Child (1888)

Do you long to improve the atmosphere of your home?
To carry a joyful disposition—rain or shine?

Then let this old cliché settle deep into your soul:
Home is where the heart is.

Let’s Pause and Ponder

We’ve all heard this saying, but when was the last time you truly considered it? How can this simple phrase shape the way we live, love, and serve within our homes?

How can it help us cultivate contentment right where we are?

The Woman’s Struggle

Discontentment is often the silent battle of a woman’s heart.

Think back to the garden: what did the Lord say Eve would desire? To rule over her husband, and yet he would rule over her. The stage was set, and that tension still lingers in us today.

Do you ever feel it?
The urge to control?
The desire for your way, in your timing?

I know I do. I have a strong suspicion I’m not alone.

A Glimpse Into Our Journey

My husband and I married at 21, both still in college. For the first six years, we moved almost yearly—wherever school and work called us.

Eventually, he was called to a sweet little church where he served for three years. We loved it. Then, life shifted, and we found ourselves packing up again, heading away from all we knew.

We’ve started over many times. And in all of it, one truth has stood firm:

“Our family was happy as long as we were together—no matter the location.”

Can we afford to buy a home? No.
Do we live on pretty acreage in the quiet countryside? Not even close.

But when I slow down and look around at the people in our home, I see the richness of life. Not because of what we have—but because of who we have.

Look for the Heart

When your home feels less than perfect, resist the temptation to wish it all away. Instead, look at the heart of it—the people within its walls.

That is where happiness dwells.

This Week’s Gentle Goal

Take a quiet moment and give thanks.
Thank the Lord for your home, however small or humble.
Thank Him for the loved ones who share it with you.

Practice this often—and see where it takes your heart.
