Simple 3-Bin Laundry Room System: Organize Your Space Beautifully on a Budget

How a 3-Bin System Can Simplify Your Laundry Space and Your Sanity

Do you ever walk into your laundry room and feel instant annoyance? Dust bunnies have taken permanent residence. Your children’s “treasures” cover every crack and crevice. The detergent is always in an inconvenient spot, and the dryer balls have disappeared—yet again.
It’s not just me…right?!

If you’re like me and long for a home that’s both functional and beautiful—even in the most overlooked corners—this post is for you. Today I’m sharing one of my favorite practical systems that’s made our small laundry space a lot more efficient (and a little more lovely).

Simplicity with Purpose

I thoroughly believe in adding lovely, thoughtful touches to your home. But I don’t believe in adding pretty things just for the sake of having eye candy everywhere. In my opinion, that kind of decorating doesn’t serve the homemaker—it just creates more to manage. And if we’re honest, do we really want more?

Our lives are already overflowing—with stuff, with commitments, with distractions. “More” constantly pulls our time and attention away from the people we love and the precious time we have. Instead, I believe the practical homemaker should focus on creating a space that is both functional and beautiful. This takes intention and practice.

So let’s begin with one often-overlooked space: the laundry room.

A Functional and Lovely Laundry Room

This is the place where the work never ends. To be efficient (and sane), you need an effective setup. And if we’re going to be doing this work anyway, why not make it lovely?

What makes a setup lovely? Simply put: things that make you pause and think, “Well, doesn’t that look nice.”

Now, we all have different laundry rooms. You may be one of the lucky ones with a thoughtfully designed, storage-rich, magazine-worthy laundry space. But this post? It’s for the rest of us—the gals with boring, builder-grade laundry rooms that are there to be used, not admired.

For example, my family rents a very standard home. Our laundry room is a simple square with just enough space for the washer and dryer, a little walking room, and a lone wire shelf on the wall.

So, how do we make this space more effective and beautiful?

The 3-Bin System

Here’s my solution: the 3-Bin System.

It’s a simple concept. In my home, the top of the dryer tends to be a catch-all zone—dust bunnies, glorious rock collections, cleaning supplies, and more. Since it’s the easiest spot to reach, everything ends up there.

So, I decided to make it work for us.

I created three distinct bins based on what typically lands on top of the dryer. You can use this system regardless of your setup—whether it’s a shelf, a countertop, or a small rolling cart.

Bin #1: The Cleaning Bin 🧺

This bin holds all the laundry essentials: detergent, dryer sheets or balls, spot remover, and whatever else you regularly use.

Tips:

  • Choose a bin that fits only what you need—no more.
  • Select something that’s pleasing to your eye. Think woven textures, floral prints, or soft neutrals.
  • Scavenge your home first—then check your local thrift store or storage bin section on Amazon.

🧼 What’s in My Cleaning Bin

These basics are all I need—and they tuck perfectly into a single, tidy bin.

Bin #2: The Treasures Bin 🌟

Mothers quickly learn that children have many “treasures.” Your trash might very well be their treasure.

This bin is where those little trinkets go. Preferably, it has a lid and is, again, pleasing to your eye.

Ideas:

I toss items in here and only purge when it’s nearing full. It’s a fun feeling to say, “Yes, son, I do know exactly where that piece of wood shaped like a jawbone is!”

Bin #3: The Dust Bunny Bin 🧹

This is your trash bin, and I recommend a narrow rectangular shape that sits neatly on top of the dryer.

Why on top? Because the lint has a shorter distance to travel. 😉

It doesn’t have to be pretty—but it does need to be clean. If you find a lidded version that’s attractive, even better!

But Won’t This Look Cluttered?

Maybe a little. But when I think about creating a functional and beautiful home, I pay close attention to what’s already happening. In this new home, I observed where things naturally landed—and I optimized it.

The 3-Bin System can work in any home. Your bins may live elsewhere, or look different, but the idea is the same:

Observe your current habits, simplify what you can, and beautify the rest.
